Fun at Work
Jenna, 19 :“My name’s Jenna and I’ve worked at the theme park for six months. I started working part-time during the summer, but I loved the job so much that I now work full-time. My job is to dress as one of the characters and meet members of the public. I can’t say which character because I’m not allowed to. We do parades through the year and special theater shows at Christmas and Easter. It’s so much fun. One of my favorite parts of the day is chatting with children—they get so excited. I always try to stop and talk to them, sign autographs, ask them about their vacation—that kind of thing. The only negative is that it can get very hot inside the costume in the summer!”
Patsy, 32 “I work on the theme park rides. Usually it’s the Mystery Monster House, but sometimes it can be the roller coaster or the train ride. On the rides, my job is to check that people are safe. But the job I like most is being a ‘scare actor’ at the Monster House. ‘What’s that?’ most people ask me. Well, you know when you go on a theme park ride and it’s dark? And after a while it feels like there are things, or people, hiding in the dark? And sometimes you might feel something touch you? Well, that’s what I do. Sometimes I may jump out at people or I may touch them on the shoulder. It’s very funny. People love being scared. That’s why we go to theme parks, after all.”
Marcus, 24 “I work on the oldest roller coaster in the park. It opened in 1897, and in my opinion, it’s still one of the best. Computers control most of the new rides nowadays, but on the Snow Run, each train on the ride has a person who controls it. We check that the passengers are safe, but we can also make the train go slower or faster and make it stop at the end of the ride. It’s great fun, but it’s very noisy, so we wear headphones. It means we can’t hear people screaming all the time!”
